What does Shift Critical do?
Shift Critical International Ltd. (Shift Critical) is a boutique advisory firm dedicated to advancing corporate sustainability and risk management. Our mission is to empower businesses and investors to achieve sustainable growth by uncovering and addressing non-financial risks that influence long-term value. With more than fifty years of combined sustainability leadership from our founders, Craig Stenhouse and Frank McShane, we provide customized solutions that help organizations build resilient sustainability strategies, strengthen governance, ensure regulatory compliance, and confidently navigate today’s complex risk environment.
Our services span all aspects of sustainable business development including, for example: human rights risk assessments in the supply chain, materiality assessments (including double materiality assessment), sustainability strategy development (from climate change scenario analysis through to stakeholder consultation), policy and framework design, sustainability reporting and the implementation of associated sustainability practices. We also advise on governance structures that align with client objectives and support sustainable business practices. By fostering internal awareness of sustainability risks and opportunities, we help our clients embed sustainability into their core operations for lasting competitive advantage.
How do you work with or engage with the CRIN network to enable tech development and/or grow the cleantech ecosystem in the oil and gas industry?
Shift Critical is eager to collaborate with CRIN members to accelerate the development and adoption of our advanced technologies for supply chain transparency, sustainability reporting, and carbon management. CRIN’s collaborative network and focus on technology innovation provide an ideal environment for scaling solutions that meet the energy sector’s evolving environmental and social challenges.
This interactive approach not only streamlines compliance and reporting but also empowers companies to take proactive measures to address risk. We work with clients on modern slavery risk mitigation strategies, such as engaging suppliers and training staff and Executive Leadership/Board of Directors on the Supply Chains Act. In addition, through our partnership with Position Green, we offer integrated solutions for sustainability reporting and carbon management, supporting organizations in meeting regulatory requirements and advancing their sustainability performance.
By engaging with CRIN members, we aim to connect with innovators and participate in collaborative initiatives that will help us further refine and expand these technologies. Our goal is to contribute practical, technology-driven solutions that enhance supply chain transparency and sustainability performance, supporting the growth of Canada’s cleantech ecosystem.

How does Shift Critical apply the Social Contract values and principles within their community?
At Shift Critical, the values and principles outlined in CRIN’s Social Contract are foundational to how we operate and engage with our own community. We believe that fairness, honesty, and integrity are not just ideals, but essential practices for building trust and delivering meaningful impact. As a young organization, we recognize that our reputation and success depend on consistently demonstrating respect, transparency, and ethical conduct in every interaction.
We actively seek out a wide range of partnerships and perspectives to strengthen our ability to respond to complex sustainability challenges. We proactively work with educational institutions to mentor and provide experience to the next generation of aspiring industry leaders. For example, we have recently concluded work with a group of students from Mount Royal University focused on business planning; working with the students to look at various challenges to sustainable growth and ways to address these. Our approach is grounded in the conviction that collective progress — especially in the context of the energy transition — requires collaboration and a commitment to shared benefit. By living these values daily, we aim to set an example for our clients and partners, ensuring that our work contributes to a more resilient and sustainable future for all.
