Event Recap: Using Solvents to Improve SAGD Operations, Lower SOR and Boost Sustainability for Oil Sands Development

CRIN was pleased to host guest speaker Alex Filstein, CTO at Watercut Inc. and expert in SAGD and solvent technologies, for a hybrid presentation on October 16, 2025.

The presentation explored how solvent technologies can improve Steam-Assisted Gravity Drainage (SAGD) operations. Filstein highlighted results from past projects, shared successes and challenges, and looked ahead to opportunities such as combining solvents with non-condensable gas (NCG) to enhance recovery and reduce environmental impact.

Filstein shared that:

• The industry is phasing into solvent commercialization

• Significant human and financial capital has been invested

• The emission reduction opportunity is between 20 and 45 per cent

• Growth is possible with solvents

• Oil price volatility impacts implementation and advancement

Filstein previously led technology projects for Cenovus Energy and ConocoPhillips. He holds numerous patents and publications.
